Putting Students First

1. In 35 years (since Fall 1980), have taught 138 sections (4.1 per year)

  • 46 sections of freshmen-sophomore level courses

  • 56 sections of junior-senior level courses

  • 36 sections of graduate-level courses

2. Supervised 44 graduate students who have completed their degrees

  • 3 doctoral students

3. Served as committee member for 54 graduate students

4. Served as one of the leaders for an international workshop on climate change in mountain areas

Dr. Marston served as one of the invited co-leaders for an international workshop that was convened in Kathmandu, Nepal, 18-27 February 2013. The Association of American Geographers (AAG), secretariat for the My Community-Our Earth (MyCOE) Program, formed a partnership with the NASA-SERVIR Program that is designed to bring geographic research tools to the Himalayan region. The AAG leader of the McCOE Program is Patricia Solis, a native Kansan and K-State graduate who has been named a K-State Alumni Fellow for 2013. The workshop was offered at the beginning of a 10-month long fellowship program for capacity building on the theme of "Climate Change in Mountain Areas," supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and NASA. The MyCOE/SERVIR workshop was designed for university students and their faculty mentors from south Asian countries and provided customized training in geographic information science (GIS), remote sensing, global positioning systems (GPS), research design and presentation, and environmental geography of the Himalayas. From a total of 130 student applications, 15 undergraduate and graduate students and their faculty mentors were selected from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Each student authored a proposal as part of the application process for a project they will pursue subsequent to the workshop, with a report due at the end of the 10-month period. Participants were supported by funding from USAID and NASA. The workshop was hosted by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu who provided some of the additional leaders of the workshop. Dr. Marston's participation in the workshop is a natural outgrowth of his Jefferson Science Fellowship in the U.S. Department of State during the 2011-12 academic year.
